108,000 households in Mombasa, Kilifi and Kwale receive weekly Covid-19 financial support

The Covid-19 cash transfer to vulnerable households has fully rolled out today, starting in 4 counties namely Nairobi, Mombasa, Kwale and Kilifi.

This initiative is targeting 108,000 households in the 4 counties. So far, details of 88,000 households have been verified and by 1pm today, the heads of 65,000 households had received the amount. The remaining 23,000 will have received the money by 3pm.

Unlike the inua jamii programme where money is given to individuals, the Covid-19 cash transfer is targeting households and the head of each identified vulnerable household will be receiving Ksh 2,000 every week.

To plan for this initiative, government used local administrators who were tasked to identify households under high poverty index, where the children were orphaned, where the head of the household was disabled and therefore unable to provide, households with a high number of people unable to fed themselves etc. However at that point, the local administrators were not informed what the data would be used for, they were just asked to provide it.

Data provided was later verified through several stages, from the National Government Administration Officers to the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of ICT.

Safaricom PLC is supporting this process and its services have been employed in the disbursement of funds. In addition, the company is aware that some people receiving the money may have fuliza loans, but for this particular initiative, an exemption has been made and those receiving the money will have a grace period of 48 hours to withdraw the money before its redirected to pay the loan.
